Series Summary (He Is, ParkviewSedalia)
Very often, you can tell a lot about a person by their name. You can usually tell their gender, although there are some names that fit both. Sometimes, you can tell their age, because names go in and out of style as time passes. Frequently, you can tell where a person might be from. There's a lot to a name.
God is called by many names through the pages of Scripture. And most of those names have some significant meaning behind them. Some of those names reveal certain qualities or characteristics about the nature of God, and we can learn a lot about God by looking at the names he has been given.
In Exodus 3, God tells Moses that his name is "I Am." Jesus repeats that name in John 8.
I Am... ... ... He Is... ... ...
Throughout this series, we will take a take a closer look at some of the names of God found in the Bible. We will dig into the characteristics of God that each name reveals. And we will be able to understand his nature more clearly, know him more intimately, and to love him more deeply!
Sermon Summary
In Matthew's Gospel, in 1:20-21, we read, "But as he (Joseph) considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, 'Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.'”
And then in Luke 2:11, the angels tell the shepherds, "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."
In both instances, a significant characteristic is revealed about Jesus. He will be a Savior. In fact, his very name, Jesus, or Yeshua, means "He Saves." That's why he came. Not to release the Jewish nation from oppression under Rome, but to release all of mankind from the rule of sin in our lives. He came to save us.
He is… Jesus!
