Our main problem in life is not terrible marriage, wayward children, financial crisis, terminal diseases etc. Our main problem in life is we need to be made right with God. And that is the function of a priest in the Old Testament. The people of God realized that they were dirty before God, and they needed someone to represent them before God. They instinctively knew they needed a mediator between them and the holy God. They needed a priest. And the author of Hebrews is telling us that Jesus is the perfect high priest that we need. And he will not only argue that Jesus is the high priest that we need but also that Jesus’s priesthood is better than the Levitical priesthood in the Old Testament.
