Hebrews 9:1-15
“I Can Only Image”
The Principle of Faith: “Believing is Seeing”
I. The Sanctuary In the earthly sanctuary (literally holies) 9:1-5
Tabernacle: “Tent of Meeting”
Prepared: By following God’s design with God’s special builders
(Exodus 31:1-11)
Divided into two parts:
A. The First Part: A veil (curtain/The Door John 10:1-9; 14:6)
“holies” 9:1-2
1. lamp stand
2. table (showbread)
3. censer 9:4 (altar of incense)
B. The Second Part: A veil (curtain) “Holiest of All” 9:3-5
1. The Ark of the Covenant
a. ‘golden pot’ manna
b. Aaron’s rod (budded)
c. tablets of the covenant
2. The ‘cherubim of glory’: God’s secret service (servants)
“over shadow the mercy seat”
3. The Mercy Seat: The place of propitiation! Romans 3:24-26;
I John 2:1
**This sight is so great that the writer was not allowed to
‘speak in detail’
II. The Service: By the earthly priests 9:6-9 “Take this brief survey”; “Rate our service” After everything was set up, prepared, let the service begin!
A. Service in the First Part: performed their regular or required duties
(Ex. 27:21)
1. Keep the oil filled in the lamp stand (Eph. 5:18)
2. Change the bread on the table (Fresh everyday! God’s Word
3. Keep the censer filled and burning Our Prayers
B. Service in the Second Part Special “BUT” 9:11
1. Only the High Priest! “went alone”
2. Only Once a Year! “sprinkle the blood” --- bulls and goats
a. first for himself
b. second for all the people’s sins
* “sins committed in ignorance” What does that mean?
* “The ‘way’ into the ‘Holiest of All’ had not been made
manifest”
III. The Symbolism: What did all of this represent to the nation? 9:9-10
The NKJV uses the word ‘symbolic’ in v. 9
All the gifts, sacrifices offered: foods, drinks, washings ---
all ceremonial
A. external: fleshly ordinances (made you ‘feel good’, clean outside
B. internal: the conscience/heart (soul & spirit) nothing changed
IV. The Solution: BUT CHRIST! 9:11-15 Let the contrast begin! The writers used the word but 2xs in
Chapter nine. (9:7, contrast of the priests ; contrast of it all with Christ 9:11)
A. The Sanctuary: The Perfect Tabernacle
1. Not made of hands (no human methods, like Adam and Eve)
2. Not of this creation
B. The Service: The Perfect High Priest: “High Priest of the Good
things to come” (9:11, 15)
Heb 9:15
“And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant,
that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.” NKJV
C. The Sacrifice: “Once for All” 9:12-15
Not for Himself!
Not to be repeated!
Not with the blood of goats & calves: but with His own blood! (Heb. 10:4)
He obtained eternal redemption!
He cleansed the conscience of our dead works (9:14)
It is not by being religious! It is not by going to Church!
It is not by giving money! (Titus 3:5-6)
He enabled us to serve the living God!
He provided a future for us!
The Superior Sanctuary:
V. The Summary for this information
1. The Heavenly Sanctuary is far superior to anything this world has
to offer!
2. The Sacrifice Christ made is far superior to anything this world
can offer!
3. The Solutions offered are superior to anything this world has
to offer!
Ezek. 36:26
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you:
and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” KJV
Eph. 4:20-24
20 But you have not so learned Christ,
21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct,
the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,
23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. NKJV
Eph. 2:4-7
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. NKJV
