Have you ever seen a movie remake? Not a sequel that simply builds on an ongoing story but I'm talking about an already told story. Then somebody comes along, changes a couple of plot points, adds some characters, but you already know how the story ends. And if there is not a lot of detail or character development or revelations that had not been known, you wonder why they even bothered. I can tell you why though. They saw the prospect of money and just took the easy road of following someone else's path. When people love money they will do anything - no matter how poor in taste, how distasteful, how abjectly evil, how rapingly, murderously, enslaving it is - evil people will do evil just as evil people have done before and for the same reasons - money and power.
Case in point: The previous dynasty before this point in today's text knew Joseph and knew Joseph's God. Joseph's God was the reason why Egypt survived famine. Today's text references a new king over Egypt which knew not Joseph and therefore did not know Joseph's God. But the new king was not Egyptian. According to the earliest historical account by an Egyptian priest named Manetho and recounted by Jewish historian Josephus, the Hyksos had come and colonized Egypt through superior warfighting technologies. There is evidence that they began arriving as friendlies, but they were able to take over the nation. They believed it was their manifest destiny to rule the lands belonging to others. But they were fearful as well as greedy. They enslaved Joseph's people - the Hebrews - to do the work they would not do themselves. They arrived pretending to be friends, colonized their lands, and in fear enslaved a people to enrich themselves. And even though a large portion of America is loathe to admit it, this story - with some plot & character changes - is the very history of the United States of America as colonizers stole, raped, murdered, and enslaved while they called it Manifest Destiny!
What does any of this have to do with how we got here and why what is is the way it is? We had Ancient Egypt's evil replayed in the taking of this land and, with some changes in methods & plot points, we have that evil here, right now. The colonizers' descendants, now in fear of becoming a minority to the minorities, maintains by forcing the mechanics of enslavement - denial of education, discrimination, marginalization, criminalization, ostracization, subsistence poverty, and oligarchy - to greedily enrich themselves and keep social domination! That's how we got here! The relevant question now is of how we can get out before the story ends. The text read to this point doesn't show the end so the people at that time did not know. But allow me to suggest to you:
1. Recognize The Pattern v8
- The more things change, the more they stay the same. The societal inertia is well entrenched. They didn't know God. To know God encourages men to love their neighbors, not to oppress them. The oppressor, not knowing God, often is too lazy to apply the necessary energy required to change course. Oppressors will do what they have done until they decide to fix what they have broken. And contrary to what anyone says, they don't want us to leave. They make money on our backs! Recognize that pattern!
2. Resist Their Power vv12-13
- Right now you cannot take their systemic power. But you can resist. Vote! Vaccinate! Think! Refuse to assimilate! Deny them opportunities to use you! Don't go along to make things easy for yourself! Be yourself and not who they say you are! Honor your ancestors for the struggles they endured. Choose to live and not die! Fight for your life because your Black life matters! Resist! Crack the foundations of their supremacy! Resist!
3. Rely On The People v14
- Moses might not come. We already saw that evil kills Moses whether it's Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, Dr. King, or Fred Hampton. We have to stick together. Don't let power divide us. Our power is in our unity. And we need each other, every single one of us! God is on the side of the oppressed every single time! And when the time comes for all oppressed people to be free, God will recompense it all! But we have to do it together!
