This verse sounds quite confusing until you understand what it means. Is Paul saying that he was spiritually alive before the law came into his life? Could this relate to young children being spiritually alive until the law comes?
No. What Paul is saying is that in his mind he THOUGHT he was alive and fine with God. But then the law came and he realised that he was in fact spiritually dead and not ok with God. The law brought the knowledge of his wretched state that he was unaware of prior to the law. The law simply showed him he was dead, it didn't actually kill him. Everyone is born spiritually dead, we just don't realise it until the law comes.
