The book of Isaiah is a rich book filled with history and prophecy. Not only do we see the condition of both Israel and Judah in his lifetime, we will see the Word of the Lord spoken through Isaiah directly to Israel and Judah, we will also see the prophecies of the future. From destruction to restoration and even to Our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Isaiah’s ministry began from about 740 to 680 B.C. after Elijah, Elisha, Obadiah, Joel, Jonah, and Amos had completed theirs. Israel and Judah have been divided into 2 nations since 917 B.C. For about 20 years, he spoke to both the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. After Israel’s fall to the Assyrians in 722 B.C., Isaiah continued to prophesy to Judah. Many kings have come and gone. Prior to the time of Isaiah, the northern nation of Israel had some 18 kings – all of which were rebellious. We can find in scripture where it says “they did evil in the sight of the lord.” The southern nation of Judah had some 11 kings before Isaiah’s ministry, some of them did good in the eyes of the Lord, and some did evil. I believe that we will see some comparisons between the condition of Israel and Judah to our culture today as we go through this book.
