“Jacob Called Israel” Genesis 32:22-32
If we were to examine the workings of Isaac’s family by today’s standards, we might conclude that it was dysfunctional, at least in an emotional sense. Strife between Jacob and Esau reached the point that Jacob had to flee for his life (see Genesis 27:41-43). It was now about twenty years later (see Genesis 31:36-38) and Jacob was on his way back home (see Genesis 31:1-3), desiring to get things right with Esau; but he had to struggle with God before he could meet his brother.
1. JACOB WRESTLES WITH THE LORD (Genesis 32:22-25)
Every believer should persist in pursuing God’s blessings (Genesis 32:22-26).
II. THE CONVERSATION (Genesis 32:26-29)
Only those who have begun a personal relationship with the LORD are adequately prepared to serve Him (Genesis 32:27-29)
III. JACOB’S RESPONSE (Genesis 32:30-32)
Memorials help us remember the life changing experiences we have had with the LORD (Genesis 32:30-32).
Jacob was at a great crisis point in his life. He was about to meet Esau, his twin brother after twenty years of estrangement. The thought of this meeting drove Jacob to earnestly seek God (see Genesis 32:9-12). Later, God in a human form wrestled with Jacob, eventually crippling him. Jacob, recognizing his divine Assailant, hung on for a blessing. The new name, “Israel” that he was given, assured Jacob that God would fight for him. Crises come into the lives of all of us from time to time. Crises drive us to our knees in prayer, and it is in those situations that God meets us and strengthens us. When crises come, we should hang on to God, and like Jacob, seek His blessing.
