The expiration Date for the Chaldean supremacy is set by God!! Yes, just 70 more years!!!
This remarkable chapter records the prophecy of Jeremiah which came at the end of twenty-three years of his ministry, during which he had continuously pleaded with Judah for their repentance and whole-hearted return unto the worship of their true God. Judah never heeded him. God found that the people could not be amended and restored to a right mind by any warnings, Judah's day of grace had expired; the longsuffering mercy of God could no longer postpone the deserved judgment of the rebellious nation;
The judgment of captivity was at hand.
The Prophet is here preaching to the people, in the usual strain of reproof. But in the midst of threatening he is commissioned to introduce a gracious promise, that the captivity shall not exceed the seventy years.
The chapter falls into three divisions:
(1) The judgment of Judah and the eventual doom of Babylon (Jeremiah 25:1-14),
(2) The cup of God's wrath upon the nations (Jeremiah 25:15-29), and
(3) The judgment of the whole world (Jeremiah 25:30-38).
The book of Jeremiah does not preserve chronology. This prophecy, was delivered in the fourth year of Jehoiakim in 605 BC. This prophecy should precede the vision of the two fig baskets of chapter 24 which had just shown to Jeremiah when Jehoiakim died, and when Zedekiah reigned in the place of Jeconiah (ie) 598 BC
