John’s purpose in John 4:1-45 is to record the teaching of Jesus as He conversed with Samaritan woman by the well in Samaria. In vs.1-15 Jesus explains to this woman that if she knew who He was and what the gift of God is, that she would have adamantly demanded that Jesus give her that gift. While she believes Jesus is talking about physical water from an earthly well, we see here that Jesus is speaking of the gift of eternal life. In this passage we see that Jesus is the Christ, the Giver of eternal life.
