Jesus' Baptism Let's Begin a New Way (Baptism of the Lord) Did you know about the four baptisms? Yes, four baptisms (Mark 1:7-11). John combines the baptism of the Jews and the baptism of the Gentiles. Jesus takes the baptism to a new level, initiating the new way forward with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

We can look at four baptisms.
Ritual washing
Proselyte Baptism
John's Baptism
Jesus' Baptism
Although each is different, they have something in common.

What is Ritual washing? People cleansed themselves of spiritual impurity. It was ritual bathing important to the Qumran community. In contrast, the proselyte baptism was for the Gentiles converting to Judaism, an initiation rite performed by immersion.
Both these traditions could have influenced John. But John does something different. Ritual bathing was self-administered, repeated ritual. We see John administering baptism as a one-time rite.

Proselyte baptism was only for the Gentiles. Why baptize Jews, who already were people of God? You see, John's baptism is directed towards the Jews in Judea and Jerusalem. All who come to receive John's baptism are Jews.

What's unique about John's baptism?
John, in combining the two traditions, creates a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Through the prophets like John, God calls people to see with new eyes and respond in uncomfortable ways to avoid harsh judgment. John preaches that the Jews require God's forgiveness and are no different from the Gentiles. So, the baptism is their first step toward a new life.
