In this video we will examine a commonly used proof text that Calvinists use to teach the doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints, also known as Once Saved Always Saved doctrine. In light of the rest of Scripture, though it is true that nobody is able to pluck a born again believer out of the hand of God, this in no way implies that the born again believer can't remove him or her self from the hand of God by sinning. The wages of sin is eternal death. Becoming a sheep and being placed in the Father's hand is conditional as we look to the entire context of John 10:26-28. It requires hearing Jesus Christ, believing Him, and following Him. Romans 10 makes it very clear that this all happens through the power of the gospel that is preached. If we respond in faithful obedience to the gospel by repenting, getting baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are then born again and are found safe and secure in the Father's hand. However, we can clearly read in Scripture that remaining a sheep is also conditional. As long as a born again individual remains a faithful follower of Jesus and continues to abide in Him (the Vine), he/she will never perish. But we must remember that a sheep can go astray! Isaiah 59:1-2 makes it very clear that a child of God can remove themselves from the hand of God by sinning, even though it is impossible for any other person to remove them from the Father's hand. We must look at the entire context of Scripture and understand that these are true statements in John 10, but we must not ignore other clear passages that reveal our ability to go against God's will, to rebel, and go astray.
