John 14:25-31 is our text this morning. In John's Gospel a large amount of the chapters are dedicated to the words spoken in the last hours of Jesus' life here on earth, to the disciples. (13-17) In the section we examine this morning the last verse is transitional, likely as they were departing for Gethsemane.

Jesus once again makes a series of promises regarding the relationship which will be made possible when He has completed the work The Father has sent Him to accomplish. Among those promises of peace (unlike any peace they may have known in the world) a remedy for trouble and fear is promised. This will allow them to look past circumstances and look to the eternal, and they will need this as the church is born. There will be a greater knowledge of things Jesus has said, and further knowledge will follow when The Holy Spirit comes to them. This too is and has been promised.

It should be kept in mind these promises mean as much today as when they heard them, because it is the same Spirit in the believer that was being promised to them. As He speaks to the disciples, so He speaks to all who know Him as Lord.
