John 6:44 is used as a proof text by Calvinists to teach the doctrine known as unconditional election. But what does this verse teach us when read in context of John 6:45? All men who are taught, and hear, learn and then come to Jesus are being referred to as being drawn by God. One must understand that the gospel is God's call and drawing power unto salvation to everyone who believes (2 Thessalonians 2:14; Romans 1:16). 2 Peter 3:9 reveals how God doesn't want anyone to perish but desires that all come to repentance. God is patient and merciful and has shown His amazing love through what He did in Christ. The reason some people are lost is not because God has unconditionally chosen them to be! People are lost because they choose to reject His call and His drawing power unto salvation. The Calvinistic doctrine of unconditional election makes God a respecter of persons and makes God responsible for the lost being lost. The Scriptures teach that God has provided salvation for all men, not just a select special few like the Calvinists teach. Jesus died for all men (Hebrews 2:9; John 3:16). God wants all to be saved and to come to know the truth (1 Timothy 2:4). The invitation is open to all (Matthew 11:28-30; Revelation 22:17). John 12:32 reveals how Jesus was going to draw all men unto Himself when He was lifted up from the earth on the cross and crucified. The gospel is, therefore, how we are drawn to Jesus! This means that all men are drawn to God by what Jesus did on the cross through His death, burial, and resurrection. Sinners have the choice to reject God's call through the gospel or accept God's call by obeying the gospel. Those who obey the gospel are saved by God's grace. God has predestinated all "in Christ" to be blessed with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3). It's our choice whether or not we want to be found in Christ or outside of Christ. Those who obey the gospel are appointed unto eternal life (1 Thessalonians 5:9). Jesus is the only way to the Father (John 14:6), and one cannot inherit eternal life without obeying what Jesus said (Hebrews 5:9). Jesus said in John 17:20 that we would believe on Him through the apostles word (the gospel they preached). Peter preached the gospel under the New Covenant for the very first time on the day of Pentecost and told them in Acts 2:38 that they needed to repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and they would receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. This is how they were to actually call upon the name of the Lord and be saved as Joel had prophesied (Acts 2:21). Saving faith is active. We prove our faith by obeying the gospel. The gospel is God's call and drawing power towards all men, but only the faithful obey and answer His call unto salvation.
