Bio info:
Harvey Floyd was Mark Lanier's beloved Greek professor at Lipscomb University when Mark was working on his undergraduate degree in Biblical Languages. Dr Floyd is now retired after teaching at Lipscomb from 1955 -2010. He and his wife Virginia, live in Nashville, TN.
It was at Lipscomb that Floyd earned his B.A. Degree, then his M.A. from Harding Graduate School of Theology and then his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt in Classical Greek. He translated the Greek New Testament for deaf people, eventually published as the "Easy to Read Bible." He is the author of "Is the Holy Spirit for Me?" And he has taught a Bible Class over 30 years for mostly Asian Vanderbilt medical students. (he mentions this class several time in the video. I was able to get a video of Harvey teaching this class a few weeks after the lecture and will upload it to show you Harvey teaching this class. It is on Jesus' resurrection.)
Mark recalls a time when a student said to Dr. Floyd "Please tell me about the day you got saved." Dr. Floyd smiled, and gently said,"It happened about 2,000 years ago on a hill called Calvary." Mark added with conviction," He always pointed us to Jesus' work." Another former student of Floyd stated, "The class [on Romans] changed my life. For the first time I truly understood the marvelous grace offered to us in Jesus Christ."
In a story about Floyd when he retired, Sandra Collins wrote, "When he talks about God's abundant grace, his eyes would sparkle, his voice is quietly intense, his smile is gracious, his belief is genuine, his delight in students is unmistakable and his transparent, transformed life is his visual aid."
Dr. Floyd has blessed many, many students in his 55 years of teaching and all of them could echo these words of appreciation. He continues to teach in different settings. For example, The Harpeth Hills Church had him teach a 10 week Wednesday night series on "The Gist of Romans and Galatians" which was recorded. (Ephesians 2:8-10 is one of his favorite nuggets from the Greek New Testament that is "a summary of salvation.")
