Title: The Finger of God
Passage: Luke 11:14-26
Speaker: Kevin Maloney

In this passage, the scribes and Pharisees are accusing Jesus of casting out demons by the power of Satan. Jesus’s response to them reveals their hearts and places them as the bad guys in a classic biblical story. He reveals that He is doing His work by the power of God and He is a force to be reckoned with.

The Purpose of Miracles - Luke 11:14-16
- When Jesus does miracles, people often respond by demanding more miracles or explaining the miracles away. Since the role of miracles is not to produce faith by allowing seeing to be believing, what is the purpose of them?

The Finger of God - Luke 11:17-20
- When Jesus is accused of casting out demons by Satan, he refers back to the miracles in the Exodus story by saying His miracles are done by the finger of God. This puts the Pharisees in the place of Pharaoh. Why would this be shocking for them?
- Can you think of ways we read ourselves into the biblical stories as the heroes of the story? Are there places where we may actually be the villains?

The Power of the Gospel - Luke 11:21-26
- Why is converting people to Jesus often thought of as a waste of time?
- Why do you think there are calls today for the church to do something more meaningful?
- If what Jesus says in this passage is true, what should we expect some of the results of gospel belief to be in our culture? What issues would be improved by many people coming to faith in Christ?
