Hello, I am Pastor Matthew Verhoog from the Valley Alliance Church, and I would like to explain Luke 4:31-44 in three minutes.
In these verses, we learn i]that Jesus has a unique authority, Authority in his teaching, over demons and over all sickness.
And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority
Luke 4:31-32
Jesus was not like other teachers because he taught with authority. Jesus is God Himself, the very word of God made flesh so the authority of his teaching did not flow from the text, or from God’s spirit coming on him, but from his very being, in harmony with the text and Spirit
Jesus also had authority over Demons
”with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!" Luke 4:36
He was not a magician or miracle worker but he commanded the demons and they came out. His word had a unique power, the kind of power that only God has.
Jesus has authority over Sickness
And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them. Luke 4:38-39
Jesus simply tells the fever to go away, He has absolute authority to command the fever as He desires.
He can command Cancer like I might command my kids. Well if they actually listened to me.
This text shows that Jesus has unique authority in his teaching and over demons and sickness.
This can
1) Give us confidence that Jesus is who he says he is, He backs his words up with power that everyone recognized.
2) Jesus authority can free us from fear
Many things bring fear to our hearts. Sickness, demons, spiders, Hi touch surfaces, But when we know that Jesus Christ has absolute authority over everything we can trust Him no matter what.
The virus may spread, the economy may collapse, yet Jesus has the authority, So when we are safe in his hands we are truly safe.
