• In Matthew 26, Jesus prepared to go to the cross as mankind’s Redeemer, making a way to purchase sin’s slaves and redeem them. He gives believers a new life of present joy and eternal hope.
• Matthew 26:27-29, 39, 42, 45 o Redemption is a word borrowed from the world of commerce and often associated with the buying and selling of slaves. o Jesus willingly paid the purchase price, His own precious blood, to redeem people who were enslaved to sin and its just penalty.
o The Old Testament book of Hosea illustrates this concept as God led the husband Hosea to pay the price to redeem his unfaithful wife. This account illustrates God’s redemptive love for His unfaithful people, Israel.
o Everyone is born a slave to sin; only Jesus can set us free.
o The redemption price Christ paid for believers was far more valuable than gold or silver. He paid with His own precious blood (1 Peter 1:18-19).
o We need to understand the costliness of sin, the price that redemption required, and the freedom Christ purchased for believers.
