New Testament - Acts 2:22-41 "The First Easter Sermon"

Sermon Notes: Easter 2020 - Acts 2: 22-41
“The First Easter Sermon”

1. Peter Gives Four REASONS for Faith
Vs. 22-36

REASON #1
Jesus demonstrated by HIS LIFE that he was the Messiah sent from God.

1) In HIS LIFE he performed signs and miracles.
Vs.22
“Attested or Accredited” means demonstrated

2) In HIS LIFE he lived and died in fulfillment of prophecy.

There were hundreds of prearranged signs or things that Jesus must do if he were the Savior of the World
Some scholars have specified 456 such specific prophecies.
.
REASON #2
Jesus demonstrated by HIS DEATH that he was the Messiah sent from God.

Notice several things that Peter says about his death.

1) HIS DEATH was according to God's plan.
Vs. 23
John 10: 17,18
Isa 53:10

2) HIS DEATH was at the hand of those who rejected him.
Vs. 23

3) HIS DEATH was a sacrifice for our sins.
1 Peter 3: 18
What was the purpose in Christ dying on the cross?
That He might bring us to God The phrase “bring us to God” is a technical term that means “gain audience at court.”
(Eph. 2: 18; 3: 12) (Rom. 5: 2)

REASON #3
Jesus demonstrated by THE RESURRECTION that he was the Messiah sent from God.
Vs. 24
1) Peter says that the Resurrection was witnessed by all the disciples.

2) Peter says that the RESURRECTION of Jesus was prophesied by David.
Peter quoted David from Psalm 16: 8-11
Vs. 27 says,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

3) Peter also explains that after the RESURRECTION Jesus is exalted at the right hand of God.
He now quotes Psalm 110

Matt 22: 41-46
The Lord who sits at the right hand is of course is the Messiah.

REASON #4.
Jesus demonstrated by fulfilling THE PROMISE of the Holy Spirit that he was the Messiah sent from God.
If Jesus were dead then he could not send the Holy Spirit, but since the Holy Spirit is here then he must be alive. Not just alive but he must have ascended to heaven.
Acts 4: 13

1) Peter gives an opportunity to RESPOND
Vs.37-41

2) Peter said that they should respond by REPENTING.
Repent means to change the mind.

In this case, it means that we change our mind to agree with God.

3) Peter said that they would RECEIVE remission of sins.
What is remission of sins?

We accept the fact that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and He forgives us of all our sins.
1 John 1: 9-10

4) Peter said that they would RECEIVE the gift of the Spirit.
When we respond to God’s grace, He then gives us the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is the Savior of the World.
The question is, “Is He Your Savior”?
