I have noticed something. With our world being what it is, with all the problematic issues we face - evil greed causing the lack of necessities, absence of health care, marginalization and discrimination of and against anyone not of the structures of power, corruption, treason against the ideals of democracy, wealth inequities worse than they were before the Great Depression, taxation, policing, and court systems that unequally apply the law to the haves and to the have nots, and an ever evolving pandemic that has killed at least 5.6 million people worldwide with 780,000 dead in our country - people still are not turning to God. In our faith, that means believing in Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son. To their reckoning, some would say that they don't need Him. Others would say that they don't want Him because of what evil men have presented Him to be. I understand where they're coming from. If you don't believe that you need Him or have chosen to not want Him, I really cannot do much to change the minds of people who already think they know what they already need to know. But there are some people who recognize that the world is in trouble and themselves along with it. They know that they cannot make it alone and that man has not been able to fix the situation or assuage their fears. They have heared that there is a God that sits high and looks low, served by these people who call themselves by His name. Yet and still they are not quite ready for Jesus. And these folk may be the hardest to reach because know that they need help, but are still trying to help themselves. I am sorry to burst some bubbles but somebody needs to know that you can't do everything by yourself. Doesn't matter how pious or prayerful, smart or strong, allied or alienated you have been, you can't make it by yourself. To make it through a foul temporality into a blessed eternity, I suggest Jesus, even if you're not ready. How can you help someone?
1. Go Before Him v17a
- Zechariah was a devout man who served God. He and his wife Elisabeth were faithful, aged, and childless. I understand their devotion. When you don't have what everyone else does, turning to God makes sense. The angel Gabriel appeared as he went before the Lord in the temple for the people and told him that they would have a son to go before the Lord as well. Do you realize that your faith now may prefigure faith of those to come after you? Go before Him!
2. Gain BackTheir Hearts v17b
- I hate to say it but it's true: Too many have lost heart. They have lost love, compassion, care, and connection. But to be connected to God means necessarily that your will must be engaged. To truly be connected to God, you need to want Him. What does your heart cost? What will it take to gain a heart? Do what you need to but gain their hearts!
3. Get Back To Holiness v17c
- Get them to holiness. This means allowing them room to separate from what was to walk into what will be. Some don't want to let go. But some of us can't walk into our destiny because we're holding onto what is to our detriment. Show them a more excellent way! Be holy and show them that it can be done!
4. Give Blessings At Home vv23-24
- There is a great work to do. But I want you to notice that if all spoken by the angel, most is about John, not Zechariah. What Zechariah had to do was the easiest and most basic thing. He hadto get home and love his wife. He hadto be a blessing at home. And what we tend to forget is that great things start with small things. You can't get to great unless you handle small. Be faithful over few things. You may not be the one to complete the mission, but do your part to get the ball rolling! Start where you are! You don't need a great assignment! Just do your assignment. Be a blessing where you are! That is how you get people ready for Jesus!
