PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
Genesis 33:1-20
“Two Brothers Reconciled”
1. Jacob would attempt to be RECONCILED to his brother.
Vs. 1-3
1a. Jacob’s attempt at RECONCILATION began with the way he would present his family.
Though exhausted, Jacob frantically arranged his family for formal presentation to
Esau.
Jacob made it clear who he really loved and who he didn’t. He also made it clear
that the struggle to trust God continued.
1b. Jacob’s attempt at RECONCILATION began with the way he would present himself.
Jacob’s bowing was the reverse of the blessing that he had stolen for himself.
Gen 27:29
Jacob still had a hard time believing God’s grace.
Does God give us what we deserve? NO!
Isa 55:9, Isa 55:12
2. Esau’s RESPONSE comes as a great relief.
Vs. 4-11
2a. Esau’s response includes embracing Jacob and meeting the entire family.
Esau makes no mention of the past.
God had changed the heart of Esau.
2b. Esau’s response included hearing about the grace of God.
The grace of God providing a family
Jacob saw and spoke of his family as the work of God and his grace.
The grace of God in answered prayer
We might also conclude that Jacob is saying that God had answered his prayer
concerning their reconciliation.
2c. Esau’s response and reconciliation came after Jacob had been changed by God.
God’s crippling of Jacob (Jacob’s humbling) preceded his reconciliation with
Esau. Matt 22:37-40
2d. Esau’s response includes a refusal to accept Jacob’s generous gifts.
Etiquette in patriarchal times required that Esau make a show of refusing the gift
and that Jacob insist he accept it.
3. Jacob would politely REFUSE to follow his brother.
Vs. 12-17
3a. Jacob would REFUSE the offer to travel to Seir
Seir was outside the Promised Land.
In fact it was in Southern Jordan.
God’s word to Jacob at Bethel was that God would bring him back to the land (cf.
28:15).
Moreover, God’s chosen people were to remain separate from those who were not
people of faith.
The dangers in Esau’s generous offer were therefore substantial.
3b. Jacob would REFUSE the offer to travel to Seir by offering a pretty lame excuse and a
lie.
Jacob began with exaggeration in vs. 13.
Jacob then moves from exaggeration to deceit in vs. 14.
3c. Jacob would REFUSE the offer to travel to Seir and instead
he would build a house in Succoth.
Jacob, now rid of Esau, did not make the short trip to cross the Jordan into the
promised land and up to Bethel.
Succoth was north back across the Jabbok and a step back spiritually.
4. Jacob REACHES the Promised Land.
Vs. 18-20
4a. Jacob REACHES the Promised Land and settles near
Shechem.
This was halfway, incomplete obedience.
So we have in Jacob faith mixed with partial obedience.
4b. Jacob REACHES the Promised Land and builds an altar.
Jacob built an altar in Shechem and gave it a magnificent name, El-Elohe-Israel,
which means “the God the God of Israel.” Gen 28:18-22
4c. Jacob REACHES the Promised Land but does not reach Bethel
Partial obedience is always disobedience, no matter what our rationalizations are.
