Psalm 51:5 is one of the most often quoted passages used to teach the doctrine of original sin (inherited sin). When examined in the entire context of the Psalm and without looking at it through doctrinal glasses, we will quickly see that it does not teach inherited sin or that iniquity was shapen in David, but rather that David was shapen in iniquity. David was brought forth into a world of sin. The next part of the verse describes the sin of David's mother. David was conceived out of the sinful act of adultery (out of wedlock) and so David was explaining that he was conceived out of a sinful act on his mother's part. Nowhere is David saying he inherited a sinful nature from his mother or that he was born a sinner, as doing so would be coming up with excuses for his sin. Rather the first four verses show how he acknowledged that he had done wrong and had sinned against God. In verse five he is acknowledging that he was born into a sinful world and was even conceived out of a sinful act. Join me in this video as we discuss this important subject in more detail.
