Romans 8:35-39 is commonly quoted as a proof text to teach the doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints (aka Once Saved Always Saved). But when we examine this passage of Scripture in context and in light of the rest of God's Word, we can conclude that this passage is referring to how nothing from without a born again believer can separate them from the love they have for Jesus Christ. It is obvious that tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword would never separate the love of Jesus Christ towards us. But it is reasonable to conclude that these things could cause a born again believer's love of Jesus Christ to grow cold and even vanish. This is because what goes on from the inside in our hearts can cause us to do things that can separate us from salvation (eternal life) which is in Jesus Christ. This is why it is so important to continue to abide in Jesus Christ after we are born again. We must walk after the Spirit and not after the flesh. Jude 21 exhorts born again believers to "keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life." How can one keep themselves in the love of God if nothing can separate them from God's love? Calvinistic theology is full of contradictions!
