Jesus encountered a Jewish lawyer who thought he could earn heaven and that there were certain types of people he did not have to love (i.e., serve). Through the parable of the good Samaritan, Jesus reminded him and us that God's command to love our neighbor means that we should show compassion and mercy to everyone regardless of who they are or whether or not we agree with them.
