After the ascension of Jesus to the Father, the 11 remaining of His circle returned to Jerusalem. They did not immediately press into solving the world's problems and issues. They came back. The didn't go out. In troubled times, I suggest to you that before you go and do anything, perhaps you need to pray. The word is how God talks to us. Prayer is us talking to God. And I think that maybe we should take the time to connect with God. Prayer is transformative - it changes us, not necessarily things. Check out some of the prayers we hear like prayers to eliminate Covid? It's still here. Prayer is designed to change us to be used of God, not to change the reality of our circumstances.
1. Pray In Holiness vv 12-13a
- The idea of holiness is to be separated from in order to be separated to and/or being separated to such that it may necessarily entail being separated from. The apostles no longer were in the crowd. If you are going to pray deeply sometimes you need to get away from the noise and focus on talking to God!
2. Pray Honestly v13b
- The apostolic circle was there. They had been together with Jesus. They prayed together which meant they were on their honor to pray honestly. Prayer partners have great value! If you and your friend were in the same place, heard the same things, saw the same stuff, could you get together in prayer and then lie in your prayers to God? Maybe this is why so many people put so much stock in their private dreams & visions - nobody else was there. But when you talk to God ground your words in reality, not in your fantasy! Be honest! God already knows!
3. Pray Humbly v14b
- They were on one accord. The infighting that occasionally characterized their interactions was gone. The text said they continued with one accord. There were no separate agendas. They sought the good of one another. There they humbled themselves to God's plans and the good of the whole. If you are going to do anything for God, humble yourself before God. There is no room for pride!
