1. A CHANGE in the priesthood was necessary.
Vs.11-17
1) The previous priesthood was never PERFECT.
Vs. 11
The words translated “perfect” and “perfection” are key words in this
epistle (Heb. 2:10; 5:9; 6:1; 7:11, 19; 9:9; 10:1, 14).
The meaning here is more specialized and means
“to put someone in the position in which he can come, or stand,
before God” —access to God.

The Law was an excellent institution.

It provided the shadows and types of that which was to come. But it
could not make perfect.
It could not bring access to God.
Rom 8:3

2) The previous priesthood was never meant to be PERMANENT.
In fact, both the priesthood and the Law have been replaced because they
are inseparable—
Paul would certainly agree with Psalm 19.
Ps 19:7-8
Christ did not destroy the Law but fulfilled it (Matthew 5:17).
He lived out its every requirement.

3) The problem of PHYSICAL descent.
Vs. 13
The qualifications for the Levitical priesthood were patently external.
Since our High Priest is from the tribe of Judah, according to His human
ancestry, then there must have been a change in Moses’ Law.
There has been!
Gen 49:10
The Messiah had to come through Judah.
But our Messiah is also our Great High Priests.

4) The PERPETUAL priesthood of Jesus is based on an indestructible life.
Vs. 15
Since Jesus Christ is Priest forever, and since He has a nature to match
that eternal priesthood, He can never be replaced.
In our previous study we saw this description of our Melchizedek priest.

Heb 7:3

2. We now have a greater CONFIDENCE.
Vs.18-21
1) As our high priest Jesus gives us the OPPORTUNITY to draw near to God.
Vs. 19
You could offer a sacrifice for your sins and you would need to do that over
and over again.
Isa 64:6

What is the alternative?
a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
Heb 10:19-23

2) The LORD swore an OATH that Jesus will remain our great high priest.
Vs. 20b
No priest in the order of Aaron was ever ordained and established on the
basis of God’s personal oath.
Ex 28:1, Lev. 21:16–24

3. Jesus is the guarantor of a better COVENANT.
Vs.22-25
1) Jesus is the guarantor of a better COVENANT.
Vs. 22
Jesus Christ is the “surety of a covenant” (Heb. 7:22).
The word “surety” means “one who guarantees that the terms of an
agreement will be carried out.”
That COVENANT was promised through the prophet Jeremiah. Jer 31:31
Matt 26:28-29
Jer 31:33-34

2) The Priesthood of Jesus will CONTINUE forever.
Vs. 24
Not only was the previous priesthood imperfect, but it was also interrupted
by death. The Greek word for unchangeable or permanent can mean that
the priesthood is non-transferable.
Heb. 13:8

3) Jesus is able to save us COMPLETELY.
Vs. 25

And how does he do this?
It is through his substitutionary atonement and propitiation for our
sins. But our text adds a vital and dynamic dimension: since He
always lives to make intercession for them.
” (v. 25b).
Rom 8:33-34

We are a non-denominational fellowship of believers in the God of the Bible, who simply seek to know and walk with Him in Spirit and in Truth. A distinctive of Calvary Chapel is that we place an emphasis on the Word of God, simply and yet diligently studying and teaching it book-by-book, chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse. Please join us at Calvary Chapel Windward as we worship God and study his word.
