The first thing to notice in this passage is that the word “appear” is used three times in
Hebrews 9:24–28?
These three uses give us a summary of our Lord’s work.
He has appeared to put away sin by dying on the cross (Heb. 9:26).
He is appearing now in heaven for us (Heb. 9:24).
One day, He shall appear to take Christians home (Heb. 9:28).

1. The PRESENT appearance of the Messiah.
Vs. 23-24
1) The PURIFICATION of the things in heaven.
Vs. 23b
The things on earth were ceremonial purified; it meant that the persons and
objects were now acceptable to God.

So, what are these things in heaven that need to be cleansed?
It involves SALVATION.
The blood sprinkled on a piece of furniture did not change the nature of
that piece, but it changed God’s relationship to it.
The blood of Jesus Christ not only purifies the conscience of the believer
(Heb. 9:14),

It involves SATAN.
This cleansing in heaven must be done because of the presence of Satan.
Both Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 speak of the fall of Satan.
Job 1:6-7

In Revelation 12 Satan is finally kicked out of heaven.
Rev 12:7-9

2) The PLACE the Messiah entered.

Vs. 24
Jesus has entered the heavenly sanctuary.
Beware of trusting anything for your spiritual life that is “made with
hands” (Heb. 9:24).
It will not last.

3) The PURPOSE of His appearance.
Vs. 24b
Rom 8:34

2. The PAST appearance of the Messiah
Vs. 25-28
1) The CONTRAST with the previous priest.
Vs. 26b but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away
sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
There can be nothing incomplete or temporary about our Lord’s ministry in
heaven.

2) The CLEANSING He provided.
Vs. 26b
“has appeared” is past tense.
4 things about the CLEANSING He provided.
We were REDEEMED in a moment in time.
The Redemption occurred when Jesus died on the cross for us.
Ephesians 1:4-5
Just to be clear on what this means, the verb chose means it has nothing
to do with us.
It is in the aorist tense- in a moment in time in the past
It is middle voice- this means God acted out of his own interest.
John 15:16

It REQUIRED His appearance.
Vs. 26b
Notice the APPEAR is past tense.
He appeared in order to be a sacrifice for our sins.

It REVEALED the center of God’s eternal plan.
Vs. 26b but now, once at the end of the ages,
This was the culmination of God’s prophetic plan.

He REMOVED the problem of sin completely.
Vs. 26b
He did not just cover sin, but He put it away.
John 1:29-30

3) The CONSEQUENCES that we all face.
Vs. 27
He died once
We die once
Everyone will face a judgement
Believers will face the Judgment Seat of Christ
The Bema Seat
Non-believers will face the White Throne Judgment
Rev 20:11-15

4) The CONCLUSION we are to draw.
Vs. 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many.
The motive was to please the Father.
Heb 10:7-10
The “was offered” refers to that moment in time.
41 times Jesus makes reference to the Father having sent
Him and His desire to please Him.

His mission was to die for our sins
To Bear means to lift up.
And certainly Jesus was lifted up at the cross.
John 3:14-16
You remember when Jesus was lifted up on the cross there was a
sign over His head.
The High Priest and the Sanhedrin did not like it and wanted it
removed.
Why?

John 19:19-22
The letters that stood out to them would have read YHWH.

3. The Future Appearance

Vs. 28
This is the third time that the word APPEARANCE has been used. And
here the word is optanomai (op-tan'-om-ahee) It is where we get our word
ophthalmologist.
So, this means to literally see Jesus.
Heb 12:14
Used by John in Revelation 22.
Rev 22:3-4
None of us have literally seen Jesus yet therefore, this is a future event.
1) The PEOPLE who will be blessed.
Vs. 28
In Hebrew to look at or upon means to place your faith in that person.
Zech 12:10-11

2) The PURPOSE of his future appearing.
Vs. 28b
Notice it is a second time and without sin.
Does this imply that the first time it was with sin?
NO!
Jesus came and will come again without sin and for salvation.
Here His Appearance is the Rapture of the church.
