The Faith of Abraham
The International Standard Sunday School Lesson for Sunday, July 18, 2021 is entitled: The Faith of Abraham
The Summer Quarter focus is on gaining Confident Hope, Unit 2 is called Faith and Salvation, and this is Lesson 2 entitled The Faith of Abraham.
Our Lesson Study Text is from Unit 2, lesson 7, and is from the book of Romans chapter 4, verses 1-12.
The Recommended Devotional Reading is found in Genesis 15:1-6.
Genesis15, Verses 1 through 6.
After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
Recommended Background reading is the entire chapter of Romans 4.
The Memory Verse is from Romans 4:3(B): Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.”
The Lesson Aim.
After participating in this lesson each participant should be able to:
1. Summarize the nature of Abraham’s righteousness.
2. Distinguish between, “imparted righteousness”, and “imputed righteousness”.
3. Make a list of ways that imputed, (credited), righteousness will direct his or her thoughts and actions in the weeks ahead.
A Lesson Commentary:
What shall we say about our flesh, and our spirit?
Are we saved because we do good works righteously with our hands?
Are we saved because we believe wholeheartedly the Word of God and fear the LORD because of the sin nature of our flesh?
The Lord did not come to save our flesh. It is only earthen clay and dirt, that deteriorates over-time, and eventually returns to the earth as dust.
It does not warrant us any value, other then what it is… a place for our spirits to dwell comfortably, while we are here on earth.
We are to treat our earthen temples respectfully, preserving our structures before God with integrity.
Realizing that the Lord God of Israel has a spiritual work for all of us to accomplish in our earthen physical bodies.
This is why we should be comfortable in our bodies, and why the Lord sends us “The Comforter”, (which is the Spirit of Truth, the living Word of God), to abide with our own spirits.
What is the purpose of this Lesson study?
To teach us how all men and women, boys and girls, Jewish or Gentile, Greek or Barbarian, are Saved By Faith ONLY, and not by works of, or, to our flesh.
“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence,.
Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
Philippians 2:12-13 ESV
The Lesson Summary
Before Moses, the law giver, was Abraham, the faith giver.
Abraham became the Father of Faith both to the uncircumcised Gentiles, and then to the Jewish people after Circumcision.
So we see that it is Faith that Saves the Jew and the Gentile.
All men are saved by the same Faith that anchored Abraham to the LORD God of All Creation.
Too many Christian Religious denominations add to the Word of God: “YOU ARE SAVED BY FAITH… AND… BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, AND BLAH.
Proverbs 30:6
Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
