The Greatness of Melchizedek
Hebrews 7:1-10
Gen 14:16
Gen 14:18-24
Chapter 7 is a focal point in the book.
To the Jews the priesthood was critical. Without the priest no sacrifice could be made. And therefore, no sin could not be forgiven. Therefore, the subject now returns to Melchizedek.
Heb 6:20
1. His greatness is seen in his ___________________ as king and priest.
Vs. 1
He is a priest of God Most High.
Vs. 1
The Hebrew term for God here is 'El Elyon'.
Which means he was God of heaven and earth.
Was the Messiah was supposed to be both King and Priest?
Zech 6:13
2. The greatness of his identity is ______________ in the names given to him.
Vs. 2
king of Salem, meaning "king of peace,"
Melchizedek is king of the city of peace, which is Jerusalem.
Ps 76:1-2
For it is God's special city. Ps 132:13-14
Who is Melchizedek?
Many Rabbi’s believe he was Shem, son of Noah.
Shem means “the name”
Abraham’s father was Terah and he was in the lineage of Shem.
Another view is called the Historical View
They believe that Melchizedek is just a historical person.
They believe that he was a “type of the Messiah”.
Josh 10:1-2
The view we will argue for is that Melchizedek is a Christophany.
This would be a preincarnate appearance of Jesus.
Ps 110:1, Ps 110:4
3. His greatness is seen in his ______________ qualifications.
Vs. 3
1) One of his qualifications is that he has no DECENDANTS.
Vs. 3
Of course, all Levitical priest move prove his genealogy.
Num 3:1-3
2) One of his qualifications is his DIVINITY.
Vs. 3b having neither beginning of days nor end of life
Melchizedek appears on the scene and off the scene without any other history.
Only God is eternal.
Melchizedek is eternal.
Vs. 3b but made like the Son of God
We have another reference to someone like the Son of God in Daniel.
Dan 3:24-25
Nobody that reads that story and says that one like the Son of God was just a historical figure.
Do Jews believe that God has a Son?
At least did they believe that at the time of the writing of this letter in the 1st century?
Ps 2:1-3, Ps 2:7-8, Prov 30:4
3) One of his qualifications is his DURATION.
Vs. 3b remains a priest continually.
This does not match up with any other priest in the Bible.
Levitical priest served only 25 years. (From age 25 to 50)
4. His greatness is seen in his _______________ relationship to Abraham.
Vs. 1b-2a, 4, 7
1) His PREEMINENT relationship to Abraham is seen in the fact that Abraham paid a tithe to him.
Gen 28:18-22
2) His PREEMINENT relationship to Abraham is seen in the fact that Abraham was blessed by him.
Vs. 7
In a formal blessing the superior always blesses the inferior. Gen 12:3
John 8:52-59
5. His greatness is seen in the ______________ of tithing.
Vs. 5-6
1) It was the RESPONSIBILITY of the Levitical priest to collect the tithe.
Vs. 5-6
The ability of the Levites to collect tithes came from the law not because they were superior.
2) It was the RECOGNITION of the greatness of Melchizedek that prompted Abraham.
On the other hand, Melchizedek collected the tithe from Abraham, and it was not required.
Jesus is the grand, true, eternal Melchizedekian priest/king who gives righteousness and peace!
