Last week we began looking at the qualifications of an overseer. We covered how he must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach. We will pick up in verse three as we continue in our study titled “The Heart of Leadership” An overseer is one who is 3 not [b]given to wine,

The Greek word used here for given is:
paroinos
par'-oy-nos
staying near wine, that is, tippling (a toper): - given to wine.

So the idea here is that an overseer should not be one who is drawn to alcohol, or frequently has to have a drink. I believe this includes social drinking and especially going to bars. So does this prohibit a pastor or leader in the church from all alcohol? I don’t think that Paul is saying that. He actually tells Timothy to have a little wine for the stomach and other ailments.
