John the Baptist joins with the many Old Testament prophets that God called, commissioned, and sent to preach to the people the glorious message of the gospel. As John the Baptist begins his ministry of proclamation and baptism, we see how the Lord has sovereignly led in placing John the Baptist as not only the final Old Testament prophet but also the one who would have the privilege of announcing the arrival of Jesus the Messiah. Matthew provides us with some essential details about John. These are as follows:

Detail #1: His Arrival (v. 1)
Detail #2: His Message (v. 2)
Detail #3: His Purpose (v. 3)
Detail #4: His Appearance (v. 4)
Detail #5: His Ministry (vv. 5-6)
Detail #6: His Warning (vv. 7-10)
Detail #7: His Prediction (vv. 11-12)
