“This is My Fight Song” was the 2015 break out hit for Rachel Platten. Written as a theme for her determination not to give up on her music career, its positive lyrics and her powerful vocal performance fall easy on the ears while lifting up the heart and mind.

This song would have been the perfect anthem for the little boy who stood up to take his rightful place as king of Judah one morning almost 3000 years ago. Our Morning Minutes in the Bible here on An American Missionary have been working through the dark days of Judah when the evil queen Athaliah almost single handedly destroyed the nation. First, she stood by her husband, when he killed all his brothers to eliminate any rivals to the throne (2 Chronicles 21:4). Considering her background as the pagan Baal worshipping daughter of Jezebel, she was likely encouraging him, perhaps even pushing him to commit the evil deed. Then, when her son was killed by Jehu, she immediately ordered the execution of every potential rival for the throne, including her own grandchildren. Ultimately she failed because God preserved the line of David through the actions of one brave woman who saved the last child, Joash (2 Kings 11:1-2).

Like a small boat on an ocean the seven year old child stood bravely in the temple while the High Priest, Jehoida, arranged a rebellion against the evil Athaliah. With a single phrase, “Long live the king” the match was lit that led to an explosion of rebellion. Hearing the noise the queen came running, but despite her cries of “treason” her reign and evil life were over. No one came to her side (2 Kings 11:12-16). No longer hiding in the temple the young king took back his life.

Do the Athaliahs of this world have you hiding in fear? Is sin holding you down? One name can cause an explosion that lets you take back your life – Jesus. Strike the match. Set off the explosion. Make the song of Jesus your fight song, your take back your life song.
