The Perfect Offering (Hebrews 9:11-15)

1) Memory Verse:
a. And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. ~ Hebrews 9:15
2) First Thoughts
a. Review agreements, or covenants – how they are enacted.
b. Being a Christian means being a “signer” to a covenant beyond compare. Learn the nature of that new covenant and how God put it into effect.
3) Understand the Context
a. The O.T. tabernacle and the atonement sacrifice offered there served as starting points for God to explain the new covenant in Jesus Christ and His once-for-all sacrifice.
b. God shows that the animal sacrifices offered at the tabernacle never had the power in themselves to break sin’s curse or transform the human heart. Only the precious blood of Christ could make the removal of our sin possible.
4) Explore the Text
a. Verses 11-12 – Christ’s Entry
i. The picture of the tabernacle helps Hebrew believers (and us) grasp more completely everything that Jesus has done to provide the way of salvation.
ii. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. ~ John 20:17
b. Verses 13-14 – Christ’s Superior Sacrifice --- Talk about the blood!
i. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; ~ Eph. 1:7
ii. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. ~ Romans 5:9
iii. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, …
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: ~ I Peter 1:18-19
c. Verse 15 – Christ’s Mediation
i. Jesus’ death on the cross serves as the perfect, final, and complete sacrifice for your sins. No other atoning sacrifice for sin is necessary.
ii. “eternal inheritance” --- We live in His presence, fellowship with Him in an intimate relationship, experience His forgiveness, and enjoy His unending care.
