Study Notes:
Three main views -Pre-Tribulation, Mid-Tribulation and Post-Tribulation rapture.
1 Thessalonians 4:18- “Therefore comfort one another with these words.”
Matthew 24:29-30- Jesus returns to the earth after the tribulation.
1 Thessalonians 5:9 “For God did not appoint us to wrath…”
Malachi 4:5 tells us the “… the dreadful Day of the Lord.”
1- Did the Apostle Paul say the Rapture will happen before the Tribulation?
1 Thessalonians 5:2-3 “the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them…”
Many people believe this “falling away” (2 Thess. 2:3) is a doctrinal falling away from the faith- aka- an apostasy.
1) The meaning of “apostasia” (the word translated as “falling away” in most modern Bible translations of this verse.) Acts 21:21
Greek compound of apo “away from” and istemi “to stand.”
Twelve of the 15 times this word (verb form) is used in the NT, it is not used of departing from the faith. The word is used for departing from iniquity (2 Timothy 2:19), departing from ungodly men (1 Timothy 6:5), departing from the temple (Luke 2:37), departing from the body (2 Cor. 12:8), and departing from people (Acts 12:10; Luke 4:13).
Greek scholars such as Kenneth Wuest- It should be translated as “departure.”
There is a completely different Greek word for “falling” Apostasia does not mean falling. It means “to stand away from” “to leave” or “to depart.”
2) reason the word should be “departure” is Bible Translation History of 2 Thessalonians 2:3- All 9 of the first 11 English translations of apostasia all rendered the noun as either “departure” or “departing.”
Jerome’s Latin translation known as the Vulgate around A.D. 400 translates apostasia with the word “discessio,” meaning ‘departure.’” So, for 1200 of years of Bible translation, 2 Thessalonians 2:3 read “departure,” not “falling away.”
Catholic Rheims translation of the Latin Vulgate into English (1576) was the first translation to break this translation trend. Apostasia was changed from “the departure” to “the revolt.” (speaking of the protestant reformation). The Catholic church used “revolt” to attack the reformers like Martin Luther.
The protestant reformation, the 1611 King James Bible translators- seems they translated “apostasia” as “falling away” to indicate the Catholic church.
Most modern English Bibles follow the pattern set by the KJV.
3) reason it should be “departure” Use of the definite article- “The”
John 20:28 “And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” In the Greek, Thomas said, “The Lord of me and The God of me.” 2 Thessalonians 2:3- “The departure.”.
Could Paul have been telling them to watch for a departure from the faith? Doctrine?
4) A doctrinal departure was nothing new; nothing to watch for.
Doctrinal apostasy had already arrived in the first century Acts 20:29-30 See also- 1 Timothy 4:1–5; 2 Timothy 3:1–9; 2 Peter 2:1–3; Jude 3–4, 17–21. the Tribulation hasn’t happened and the 1st century was 1900 years ago. There have been departures from the faith since Adam and Eve and they will continue until Christ comes again.
Paul speaks of the rapture (1 Thess. 1:9–10; 2:19; probably 3:13; 4:13–17; 5:1–11).
5) Physical departure fits with the context of 1st and 2nd Thessalonians.
In verse 3 and in v. 7 and 8 we find that same sequence. Verse 7 tells of the removal of the Church; verse 8 says: “And then the Lawless one will be revealed.” 2 Thessalonians 2:5-8- What and who is restraining? The Holy Spirit in the church.
2- What do Bible types tell us about the timing of the Rapture?
Enoch- a type of the translation saints, the church. Genesis 5:24 “
