Summary: In this sermon (preached from Luke 6:37-42 by Pastor Andrew Ray), we learn of the biblical pattern and lessons of judging. Many who have never read the scripture for themselves make reference to a few verses and claim that none of us are to judge. Others take to the other extreme and say that the Bible makes no warnings against judging whatsoever. As is often the case, the truth is in the middle of the two positions. While there are risks to judging, there are also rewards. May God help us to find the balance and learn the lessons He intended.

Notes:

The Risks and Rewards of Judging
Luke 6:37-42

I. THE DANGERS OF JUDGING (Luke 6:37-39; Matthew 7:1-2; Romans 2:1-4, 11)

A. The Return of Judgment (Luke 6:37-38; Matthew 7:1-2)

1. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged (Luke 6:37; Matthew 7:1).
2. Condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned (Luke 6:37).
3. The proportion in which you give out will be the manner in which it returns upon you (Luke 6:38; Matthew 7:2).

B. The Results of Judgment (Luke 6:39)

1. The blind – (the one who sees the problem in others, but cannot see his own)
2. Leads the blind – (the one who has the problem, and may or may not know about the problem)
3. Into the ditch

C. The Righteous Judge (Romans 2:1-4, 11)

1. The judgment of God is unbiased (Romans 2:1-3)
2. The goodness of God is unbiased (Romans 2:4)
3. There is no respect of persons with God (Romans 2:11)

II. THE DECEPTION OF JUDGING (Luke 6:41-42a; Matthew 7:3-4; Romans 2:17-23)

A. The Focus Upon Others (Luke 6:41a; Matthew 7:3a)

1. The intensity of our focus – beholdest
2. The strain of our focus – “the mote”; A mote is a particle of dust.

B. The Thoughtlessness Concerning Self (Luke 6:41b; Matthew 7:3b; Romans 2:17-23)

1. The lack of focus
a. “Considerest not” (Matthew 7:3b)
b. “Perceivest not” (Luke 6:41b)
2. The loss of our focus – “the beam” (Luke 6:41b; Matthew 7:3b)
3. The likeness to the judged (Romans 2:17-23)

C. The False Hope of Helping (Luke 6:42a; Matthew 7:4)

1. I can help you with your problem – “let me pull out the mote”
2. Though I cannot see my own – “thou thyself beholdest not the beam”

III. THE DESIRE OF JUDGING (Luke 6:42b; Matthew 7:5)

A. Self-Awareness

1. Awareness of present hypocrisy
2. Awareness of my own problems

B. The Ability to Help Others

1. Repentance – “then shalt thou see clearly”
2. Rectification – you can pull the mote out of thy brother’s eye
