Gal 2:21
1. As our high priest Christ provided _______________ for our sins.
1) Christ has entered the more PERFECT tabernacle.
Vs. 11
He came having given his own precious blood once and for all, and there
he sat down at the right hand of the Father.
How is it GREATER and more PERFECT?
The writer has emphasized this fact before, because he has wanted
his readers to focus their attention on the things of heaven and not
on the things of earth.
The Old Covenant tabernacle was made by the hands of men (Ex.
35:30–35).
The New Covenant sanctuary was not made with hands.
Heb 9:24
2) Christ blood was the PRICE of our redemption.
Vs. 12
With the mention of the blood of goats and calves (or bulls) we know Paul
is talking about the Day of Atonement. 1 John 1:7
Jesus Christ became a Man that He might be able to die for people’s sins.
His death was voluntary; it is doubtful that any Old Testament
sacrifice volunteered for the job!
He carried His own blood
His blood was once for all
And Paul adds in Romans 3 that it was without cause. Rom 3:24
3) Christ has PURIFIED our conscience from past sins.
Vs. 13-14
The limited effect of the Old Covenant could make people ceremonially
clean and atone for sins of ignorance only.
Paul now leads into a very Rabbinical argument. This is the How much
more argument.
Vs. 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ
Heb 9:9
Vs. 14b cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
When we talk about “our conscience” we realize it is affected by our sin.
Rom 9:1-3
We talk about sin...but what about Guilt, Guilt Feelings & Shame. Let’s
distinguish between each of these:
Guilt speaks of the objective blame through a specific act, that merits
punishment.
Johnny was guilty of stealing the cookies.
Guilt feelings focus on how a person feels about himself. [often justifies
himself]
Johnny says, Fresh cookies out of the oven...you would have eaten
them too!
Shame springs from fear of others’ disgust, disappointment, or
ridicule once they find out.
Johnny says, does mom need to know I took some?
The Scripture presents Jesus as the answer for shame as well as guilt.
1 Pet.2:6 (quoting Is.28:16)
Acts 24:15-16
You can have a clear conscience if you want one, and the offer is for
4) Christ as our mediator brings the PROMISE of eternal inheritance.
Vs. 15
When someone died a person called the executor would make sure that all
the terms of the will were completed.
2. As our mediator’s His death was __________________.
Vs. 16-22
1) The New Covenant was put into EFFECT at the death of Jesus.
Vs. 16-17
Paul’s point is that death is necessary for the testament or will to be
activated. This is true in every culture.
2 Cor 8:9
2) Moses gave us the EXAMPLE of the first covenant.
Vs. 18-20
Hebrews 9:19–21 is taken from Exodus 24:3–8, the account of the ratifying
of the Old Covenant by Moses and the people of Israel.
3) The EVIDENCE of death was required for forgiveness.
Vs. 21-22
The Bible takes sin seriously the idea that sin alienates one from God.
We are a non-denominational fellowship of believers in the God of the Bible, who simply seek to know and walk with Him in Spirit and in Truth. A distinctive of Calvary Chapel is that we place an emphasis on the Word of God, simply and yet diligently studying and teaching it book-by-book, chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse. Please join us at Calvary Chapel Windward as we worship God and study his word.
