Sunday, July 3, 2022: “The Word Becomes Flesh” International Sunday School Lesson Pastor Ronald Jasmin and Pastor Cornelius Hill
The Apostle John wrote his gospel with one major purpose in mind. He selectively chose words and actions of Jesus that would inform and enlighten his readers concerning the fact that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (see John 20:30-31). In this week’s lesson, John first focused on eternity past. He also related that Christ, who is God (see John 1:1), became a man in order to redeem sinners.
I. THE WORD IN ETERNITY (John 1:1-5)
1. We can be confident that the One we serve is not a mere man but the eternal, all-powerful God (John 1:1-2).
2. Jesus Christ is the Architect of our universe (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16).
3. Jesus is a light that overwhelms the darkness of sin, a light that can never be extinguished (John 1:4-5).
II. THE WORD AS THE LIGHT (John 1:6-9)
4. Like John, we should faithfully point people to the Light of the world (John 1:6-9).
III. THE WORD IN THE WORLD (John 1:10-13)
5. Man is so blinded by darkness that he cannot recognize the One who formed him (John 1:10-11).
6. Being born again is a purely sovereign act of God’s Holy Spirit (John 1:12-14).
In this week’s lesson, the Apostle John gave us a highly developed introduction to the Word, Jesus Christ. The Son became flesh so that He could bring us the gift of eternal life. God wants us to leave all the whys, the whens and the wheres up to Him. He wants us to depend on Him and obey Him. A good rule for going through life is to remain emotionally sensitive to God. Let’s remember that He has revealed Himself to us through the Word, Jesus Christ.
