What does the Biblical story about Jacob's vow teach us about tithing? Should Jacob's example influence Christian giving today? Genesis 28:20-22 "Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”

The story of Jacob’s vow is important for the topic of tithing because
1. It took place outside of the Levitical priesthood.
2. He tithed of everything that God gave him, it was not limited to just spoils of war.
3. It was not limited to just one event, but all that God would give him.
4. The tithe was defined as being given to God.
5. Jacob's vow to tithe was a response to tremendous promises, it was a response to grace.
6. The vow as made in the context of his actions of worship and reverence.
