As David instructs us regarding the issue of sin in terms of its nature (Psalm 36), its display (Psalm 37), and its implications (Psalm 38), we realize that his subsequent discussion should focus on how extensive sin is. In this psalm, David provides a series of three personal and emotional realities that reveal his understanding of the extent of sin in humanity. Each of these realities also reveals the three-pronged strategy of Satan to tempt each one of us to sin. By understanding these realities, we realize more about how to overcome the temptation to sin.
Reality #1: Living in Sin Is Not Rewarding - "a craving for everything we see" (vv. 1-5)
Reality #2: Living in Sin Is Not Ambitious - "pride in our achievements and possessions" (vv. 6-11)
Reality #3: Living in Sin Is Not Pleasurable - "craving for physical pleasure" (vv. 12-13)
