Since the author of Hebrews is focused on the need for his readers to verify the reality of their profession of faith in Jesus (3:6), he writes this second warning to encourage them to make sure they indeed have come to be "in Christ" through repentance and saving faith. He explains why it is essential to not defect from true faith in Jesus because if they do defect, they will sin the same way their ancestors did during the time of Moses. He warns them that they need to know the Lord and live in obedience to Him because, unlike their ancestors, they should not desire to . . .
