Those who believe in the doctrine of soul sleep, teach that the passages of Scripture where men of God die and they are gathered to their people are referring to them being buried in a family burial site. When we examine this belief in more detail and pay attention to where Abraham and his wife were buried and where Noah was buried all by himself in the land of Moab, we can see that being gathered to their people had a different meaning. Physical death is a separation of our spirit from our body. Our body then dies and goes to the grave, returning to dust, while our spirit enters the spirit world. Before Jesus resurrected from the dead, the spirits of the Old Testament saints that had died were gathered to a place called Abraham's bosom, a place of comfort. After Jesus resurrected from the dead, captivity was led captive and those spirits were released and are now with the Lord in heaven. When we die now under the New Covenant as born again believers, our spirits go to be with the Lord in heaven, awaiting the resurrection where we will receive our new resurrected bodies.
