1. The DESCRIPTION of Faith
Vs. 1-3
1) The PRINCIPLE of faith and what faith does.
Vs. 1
The word “substance” is a translation of a single Greek noun—hupostasis,
which literally means, “That which stands under” or “foundation”.
Acts 16:31
2) The principle of faith relates to the PROMISES of the future.
Vs. 1b the evidence of things not seen.

The word evidence simply means “conviction.”
It is the same Greek word that is used in a court of law.
The writer of Hebrews makes it clear that faith is a very practical thing
(Heb. 11:3), in spite of what unbelievers say.
 We hope for Christ’s return
 We hope for the resurrection because
 We hope for glorification
 We hope to reign with him
3) History PROVES it is possible to live by faith.
Vs. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
The Elders are those listed in chapter 11.
The good testimony or good report is what we are about to read about.
4) Creation PROVIDES the foundation for our faith.
Vs. 3
It PROVIDES the foundation because it answers the question of origins.
Gen 1:1

God is the subject of the first sentence of the Bible because his name here,
Elohim, dominates the whole chapter—occurring some thirty-five times in
all.
Gen 1:26
The verb bara, ‘create,’ contains the idea of complete effortlessness.
And here the writer of Hebrews gave it precise explanation. Heb 11:3
Neh 9:5-6

2. The examples of Faith at the DAWN of History.
Vs. 4-7
1) Abel—faith WORSHIPING
Vs. 4
-1 The COMPARISON of Able’s gift and Cain’s.
Vs. 4
The implication is that they both knew about worship and the sacrifice that
was necessary.

-2 The CONCLUSION that we make of Abel is that he was righteous and
Cain was not.
Cain was not a child of God (1 John 3:12) because he did not have
faith.
-3 The CONSEQUENCES of Abel’s obedience.
Vs. 4b
In fact, Jesus called him “righteous Abel” (Matthew 23:35).
1 John 3:11-12
Jude using Cain as an example of an apostate.

2) Enoch—faith WALKING
Vs. 5–6
-1 He was TAKEN by God.
Vs. 5
This is the same idea as the rapture.
Gen 5:24
-2 He had a TESTIMONY
Vs. 5b
He was taken because of his testimony.
What was his testimony?
First it was his faith—“by faith Enoch was taken from this life” (v.
5a). And second, because he pleased God—
So, faith is a lifestyle that pleases God.
3) Noah—faith WORKING
Vs. 7
-1 Noah BELIEVED the warnings.
The primary unseen thing he was warned about was, of course, that
the earth’s population was going to be destroyed by a monstrous
cataclysmic flood
-2 Secondly that God was going to deliver Noah and his family
through a great ark which Noah himself was going to build.
-2 Noah BEGAN to work in obedience.
-3 Noah BUILT despite the ridicule and objections from the culture.
Since nobody at that time had ever seen a flood. Noah’s actions
must have generated a great deal of interest and probably ridicule
as well.
Rom 1:16-17

And that is where we started.

"The just shall live by faith."

We are a non-denominational fellowship of believers in the God of the Bible, who simply seek to know and walk with Him in Spirit and in Truth. A distinctive of Calvary Chapel is that we place an emphasis on the Word of God, simply and yet diligently studying and teaching it book-by-book, chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse. Please join us at Calvary Chapel Windward as we worship God and study his word.
