What is the Great Commission? Matthew 28:16-20 Go and make disciplesWhen Christians talk about the great commission, they talk about Jesus’ post-resurrection instruction to the disciples – especially before his ascension into heaven. Go and make disciples of all nations. We will look into the great commission found in Matthew 28:16-20. Jesus ' great commission Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Different Gospels emphasize different aspects of the Great commission
Gospel writer Luke emphasis repentance and forgiveness of sins. And in the Acts of the Apostles, Luke recalls Jesus’ promise of power and the commandment to go the ends of the earth. In the Gospel of John, Jesus gives the disciples power to forgive or retain sins.

But we see Matthew emphasize Jesus’ teaching like the Sermon on the Mount. The last act of Jesus is fundamental Christian ministry: going out, baptizing, making disciples and teaching. The disciples could do it because they had seen the risen Christ and responded to Jesus’ Great commission.

Matthew 28:16-20 had a significant influence on the church. It gives Jesus approval on baptism as a key element of discipleship. It gives us the trinitarian formula: in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. It emphasizes the key role of baptism in Christian discipleship.

Jesus gave the Great commission to 11, not twelve Apostle.
The eleven disciples had gone to Galilee upon receiving the instruction of the risen Christ. The number eleven reminds us of Judas betrayal. The Bible has lost the reference to twelve: twelve sons of Judah, twelve tribes of Israel, and yes, the twelve apostles. Matthias is not yet elevated as an apostle to restore the number 12. So, it all began with 11 disciples, like an imperfect start. Jesus sends out the imperfect to begin his good work.
