Study Notes:

1. The PROPORTION of God’s love is difficult to comprehend.
Vs. 1-3
1) Because of His love we RELATE to Him as His children.
Vs. 1
John does not use the term “sons”; rather he uses here the word
“children.”
This is a term that describes origin, birth, family relationship, family
likeness, and family characteristics.
Vs. 1 Behold what manner of love
The phrase “what manner” was heard when a ship came into
port. The “what manner” means where are they from.
Matt 8:27

2) One day Jesus will be REVEALED, and we will be like Him.
Vs. 2
-1 There is a CONFIRMATION of God’s promise to us.
Vs. 2
God is not only interested in making us his children; he desires for
all his children to bear the family likeness.
-2 There will be a CHANGE in our bodies.
Vs. 2b
We will have glorified resurrected bodies in Heaven.
Philippians 3:21
-3 We will have a CONTENTMENT we have never known.
Psalm 17:15: , 1 Cor 13:12
3) Our hope should be REFLECTED in our lives.
Vs. 3

John says that our present life should reflect HOPE.
Hope is a very important word. In the New Testament “hope” means
a settled certainty and a confident expectation
Vs. 3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself
Notice that our incentive for living a holy life is not rules but a
relationship with Jesus.

2. The PURPOSE of His coming was to save us from our sin.
Vs. 4-6
1) REBELLION is the root cause of our sin.
Vs. 4
Verse 4 makes the point that “sin is lawlessness.”
Lawlessness is willful rejection and active disobedience to the will of God.

Vs. 4 Whoever commits sin
The emphasis here is not on sins (plural), but on sin (singular):
For us to assert our will against God’s will is rebellion, and rebellion
is the root of sin.

2) The REASON Jesus came was to take away our sins.
Vs. 5
John makes the point in verse 5 that Jesus’ purpose for coming into the
world was “to take away sins.”
John the Baptist stated in John 1:29, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes
away the sin of the world!”
Heb 4:15

3) Our lives will REVEAL if we truly know Him or not.
Vs. 6
In verse 6 John affirms that no one who “abides in [Christ],” meaning no
one who is genuinely a Christian, “keeps on sinning.”

3. The PERSON who is born again lives a changed life.
Vs. 7-10
1) There will be PROOF of our relationship with Him.
God.
Vs. 7
False teachers are behind the notion that one can be born again and yet
practice a sinful lifestyle.
2) The POWER of the cross destroyed the works of the devil.
Vs. 8
The devil’s lifestyle of sin has been “from the beginning.”
What beginning are we talking about here?
John 8:44
Now look at John’s illustration later in chapter 3.
1 John 3:11-12
Col 2:13-15
Christians may rest in the truth that Satan is a defeated enemy.
3) Being born again PREVENTS us from continuing in sin.
Vs. 9
His use of the perfect tense again stresses the complete and final nature of
the new birth.
The crucial question is, what does John mean by the phrase “God’s seed”?
Peter clarifies that for us. 1 Peter 1:22-24

4) God’s children PRACTICE righteousness and love one another.
Vs. 10
Every person is a member of one of two families:
God’s family or the devil’s family.
The distinguishing mark is what one practices: righteousness or sin.
