So, this man was gathering fire wood on the outside of the camp on a Sabbath. The people caught him and brought him to Moses. Moses inquired of the Lord as to what to do with this man. God said to stone him outside of the camp so, that's what they did. Then they were told by God that they were to tie these tassels (a series of knots) to remind them of the commands of God so they would remember to follow them.
