Before I begin, allow me to apologize to everyone that I have hurt or disappointed over the course of my life. To everyone to whom I was obligated and have failed, I am truly sorry and beg your forgiveness. I have in fact let some people down in my circles of family, fellowship, and friends. I didn't want to. I mean it.
Let me also say that I am aware that there are some who I have encountered who, in their privilege and ego, believed that they were entitled to me or something from me not because of my pledge or vow, but because of who they perceived themselves to be and how they have been regarded by others. An overestimation of self-posessed characteristics, reputation, or social standing is the beginning of projected privilege in presenting oneself as a "good person." But I have learned that what some people think of themselves entitles them to nothing from me. But because these "good people" fall into their own ego traps, too easily they can get locked into a pattern of doing bad things.
The story deals with the "good Egyptians," the Pharaoh's Captain, Potiphar, and his spouse. These were not the evil Hyksos of Moses' day. These were the Egyptians who would eventually make a place for God's people during a famine so that they could be saved. These seem redeemable. Potiphar & his wife were of society's upper echelon, politically connected and wealthy, looked up to and esteemed. Enslaved, Joseph occupied a lower rung, serving them, but God blessed the Egyptians for Joseph's sake. Have you thought that maybe America has been prospered for the sake of the oppressed who serve the society and not because of oppressors who think they're good people but are really recipients of good they do not deserve? But like any "good" opressor, all they have is not enough and Potiphar's wife just has to have more. It is not a love story. It is exploitation and class privilege in action. "Good people" indeed can do bad things.
Look at her: Rich. Cultured. Comfortable. Catered to. Elevated. Esteemed. She has everything she needs but she's wants it all. And so she does bad things. I know she's a horrible person but don't be too harsh. I mean, it's not like she sent or was one of thousands of people in a government insurrection, dismissing a fair election because of her sense of entitlement and privilege. It's not like she sent people to murder government officials who opposed her. She is horrible though, even though she presents herself as a "good person." Later on she told a lie & repeated it. *That's always a clue - repeat liars are not very good people.*
You likely have already met some of these people who think themselves to be good and deserving of whatever they want, when & how they want it. If you haven't, take a look in the mirror because it's probably you. And this is a message to to everyone, oppressed or oppressor. I'm trying to help privileged and coercive people too. But I want to suggest how to handle so-called "good people" reveling in their privilege & oppressive exploitation.
1. Keep It Real v9
- They are privileged demons! Remember who you are! Joseph revealed why he could not. He did not want to offend God. He knew that God had been with him. Has God been with anybody? That's what's real! Joseph said, "You thought I was doing this for you? You're just getting the overflow from me serving God!" Keep it real!
2. Keep Refusing v10
- She kept trying day after day. He kept refusing. A devil will not stop. The tricks and deceptions, lures and temptations will only work if a person wants the offer anyway. Keep refusing. Tell those devils you already had a better offer! Anything they offer cannot be a gift and the price is too high to pay! You don't have to go along to get along! Keep refusingď
3. Keep Running v12
- She didn't give up. She couldn't overcome his will so she tried to take him by force. Anybody who tries to coerce or force you into something is doing evil, no matter how good they appear to be. Joseph ran. He left the job and he ran! He left the house and he ran! He left his possession - the garment - and he ran! You can't hesitate in getting out of the devil's orbit & out of harm's way! Run and keep running even if you have to leave what you have. If God let you be blessed once, He can do it again!
