Why should I guard myself from selfish pride?
1) Portrait of Selfish Pride (Ezek. 28:1-5)
a. Selfish pride is an attitude that God condemns as sinful. (God’s nature; a Lamb and a Dove.)
i. But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. ~ James 4:6
ii. These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look, … ~ Prov. 6:16-17a
b. Avoid selfish pride influence by recognizing attitudes and actions that characterize it:
i. Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom. ~ Prov. 13:10
ii. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. ~ Matthew 12:34
2) Folly of Selfish Pride (Ezek. 28:11-13a, 14-15)
a. The analogy of Satan is a picture of selfish pride.
b. Folly – not good
i. Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly. ~ Prov. 17:12
c. Christians should feel a deep sense of sorrow when we allow selfish pride to gain a stronghold in our lives.
i. He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride. ~ Job 41:34
3) Result of Selfish Pride (Ezek. 28:16-19)
a. Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. ~ Prov. 16:18
b. Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good. ~ Eccles. 9:18
