Paul makes it sound so easy; as a matter of fact, he makes it sound too easy to forget your past.
Have you ever tried to just forget your past? The bad stuff, the ugly stuff, or the stuff that just didn’t work for you? Most of the time it's not that easy. Sometimes it can be a lifetime of that past jumping in front of your face and messing up your present.
Yet the Apostle seems to make it so easy saying, “I do this one thing: I put it behind me and I reach for that which is ahead.” How did Paul do this with such strength?
There’s a difference between a Good Goal and a God Goal. As you approach this new year of 2016, begin to think about your goals. A good goal is something that you realize you need to do – maybe you need to lose weight, eat better, forgive more people, or go to church more – which is all good. But often times when it’s all good and not God there’s no grace to do it.
A good goal comes from your thinking. A God goal comes from a place of prayer.
A God goal is where you take time with the Lord and say, “Lord, I want a lot of things, and there are a lot of things I can suggest to you, but what do you want for me in this coming year? What is priority to you, Lord?” Then wait on Him. Let Him drop things into your spirit, and I will say – most of the time what God wants is different from what you want.
Many people can’t keep what they want because it’s from themselves; it’s a good goal but it’s not a God goal.
Take time. Seek the Lord and get before Him. Get a God goal, and you too will be able to say like the Apostle Paul, “I forget all that behind me, and I reach for what’s ahead!” Because the grace will be there to do it!
