The Kingdom Opposed
In chapter 10 of Matthew’s gospel, we witness the calling and commissioning of the Twelve Apostles. Before beginning their ministry, Jesus clarifies the mission, giving them instructions to follow His pattern of proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom, healing diseases, raising the dead, cleansing lepers and casting out demons.
Jesus cautioned His disciples about opposition that would come because of Him and His message. Opposition from institutions and people that reject Him and His kingdom should be expected by all who follow Jesus, but we are not left alone. We belong to the King (Matthew 10:32), are empowered by His Spirit (Matthew 10:20) and are cared for by the Father (Matthew 10:30-31). Three times Jesus gives these words of comfort and courage to His disciples: "do not fear."
Join Pastor Tommy Bailey as he leads us in a study of Matthew 10, listening to the voice of Jesus calling His people to mission and setting them free from fear. (20:21)

(2:00) Call to Worship: Great Is The Lord
(Psalms 145:3-9)
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and His greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall commend Your works to another,
and shall declare Your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of Your majesty,
and on Your wondrous works, I will meditate.
They shall speak of the might of Your awesome deeds,
and I will declare Your greatness.
They shall pour forth the fame of Your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.
The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
and His mercy is over all that he has made.
(18:35) Creed: What are Sacraments?
(Source: New City Catechism, Questions 43 & 46)
Leader: What are the sacraments or ordinances?
People: The sacraments or ordinances given by God and instituted by Christ, namely baptism and the Lord’s Supper, are visible signs and seals that we are bound together as a community of faith by His death and resurrection. By our use of them, the Holy Spirit more fully declares and seals the promises of the gospel to us.
Leader: What is the Lord’s Supper?
People: Christ commanded all Christians to eat bread and to drink from the cup in thankful remembrance of Him and His death. The Lord’s Supper is a celebration of the presence of God in our midst, bringing us into communion with God and with one another, feeding and nourishing our souls.
(1:03:51) Confession of Sin
Merciful God, You pardon all
who truly repent and turn to You.
We humbly confess our sins
and ask Your mercy.
We have not loved You with a pure heart,
nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves.
We have not done justice, loved kindness,
or walked humbly with You, our God.
Have mercy on us, O God, in Your loving-kindness.
In Your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin.
Create in us a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within us.
Restore to Your people the joy of Your salvation
and sustain us with bountiful grace,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
