Through the Bible: Luke 4: 23 - 44

Kingdom Citizens

The fifth documented miracle of Jesus was the healing of Simon Peter’s mother-in-law and was recorded in several of the Gospels including Luke 4:38-41. This is a simple story about an ordinary woman who was never explicitly named because the focus of the story is on Jesus’ miracle, yet her story demonstrates the power and love of Jesus. 
 
As described in the Gospel of Luke, “Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon Peter. Now Simon Peter’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So He bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.” ( THE CHOSEN ) 
 
The event took place on the Sabbath day, which is a holy day where people are not allowed to work to include performing miracles. After leaving the synagogue, many of the men that were worshipping came with Jesus to Simon Peter’s house and were planning to eat together. 
 
In those days, the woman of the house typically prepared the meal for the men, but the woman of this house, Simon Peter’s mother-in-law, was extremely ill. When she tried to greet Jesus, she was too weak and collapsed. Although it is not known exactly what her illness was, the Scripture says that she had a very high fever, making the woman weak. 
 
What did Jesus do? He took the woman’s hand and lifted her up. Immediately, the fever was gone, and there was no sign of the weakness that might be expected in a person who had been running a temperature. After Jesus rebuked the woman’s fever, it left her, and she began to wait on the guests. 
 
What also is notable about this miracle was Jesus ‘rebuked’ the fever. We see the word ‘rebuke’ on several other occasions, including the miracle to end the storm on the Sea of Galilee when He ‘rebuked’ the wind and rain, as well when Jesus ‘rebuked’ the demon during the exorcism in the synagogue. The word means, “to censure or admonish.” There are times when the solutions to our problems may require rebuke or strong admonition. 
 
No one enjoys being on the receiving end of a rebuke, yet if healing is to occur, sometimes it takes a strong word or a strong will. 
 
Anyone can play a vital part in God’s plan. The Lord’s miracles in our lives are often quiet and ordinary. It’s the small miracles that are performed behind closed doors that allow ordinary people to lead lives pleasing to the Lord, to serve Him and show others His love.

After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. 
He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them. 
At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. 
And demons also came out from many, shouting, "You are the Son of God." But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Messiah. 
At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. 
But he said to them, "To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent." 
And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

David Michael Curtis (1974-Present) was born in Roseburg, Oregon. Became a Christian at age 19 in 1993. Over the next 7 years he wore out the bindings of 11 KJV Bibles. Using his own money, he conducted his first evangelistic crusade in 1999. Taught the Bible on the radio 5 days a week on K.O.R.E. Springfield OR (2000-2002). Sold KJV Bibles and children's character building books door to door in Washington, Oregon, California, Texas, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee and New York (1999-2007). Was a volunteer chaplain for a maximum security prison in Northern California (2005-2007). Has owned / managed various Christian websites since 2001. Over the years he has served the church as an elder, new believers class teacher, and vacation Bible school teacher.

ALL DEVOTIONALS LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES LONG. The Creator made the heavens and the earth and entered His creation to solve the sin problem and give hope. Jesus died on the cross to transform all who are willing. The Scriptures are an unfailing guide for living a rational and joy-filled life of selfless goodness toward all. Your Father in heaven desires to give you the kingdom! Many have rejected a caricature of Christianity. And yet, the existence of significant caricatures points to an authentic original. There is a path of hope and an abundant life. Jesus said, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled." You long for something more. You can have it beginning today. You can receive all, but you must give all. Many are not ready to give all. My desire is that this channel will help people taste and see that the Lord is good.

The Word of His Power 
Scripture: Luke 4:31-44

One of the best descriptions of Jesus is found in Hebrews 1:3, "He is the radiance of the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power." Jesus is the glory of God up close and personal. If you want to know what God is like look at Jesus! When God speaks and brings all creation into existence, that Word is Jesus. Through Him, all things were made and by Him, all things are sustained. When Jesus speaks stuff happens. 
 
This passage shows Jesus, the incarnate Word of God, wielding the word of His power with astonishing authority as He's, dispatching demons, and mending maladies. 
 
1. Astonishing Authority 
What gave Jesus' teaching such astonishing authority? His Approach, His Content, and His Person. 
At the King's word, souls stir. 
o When the incarnate Word of God opens up the inspired word of God, soul's stir and come to life. 
 
2. Dispatching Demons 
The demon in this passage wants Jesus to be quiet and leave town. It's a challenge to Jesus' authority. 
o At the word of Jesus, the evil spirit flees the scene. 
At the King's word, darkness trembles. 
 
3. Mending Maladies 
Jesus lays His hands on the sick to bring them healing. 
o In both creation and re-creation God uses the hands-on approach. 
At the King's word, renewal begins. 
 
Takeaway: If God is for us, who can stand against us? 
The One who upholds the universe by the word of His power has given us His word that He will never leave us, nor will He ever forsake us. He promises to be with us always and to the very end. And if God is for us, who can stand against us?
