The last of Hezekiah's life and the succession of Manasseh is a tragic and interesting study in that time of Judah's history. It shows what a godly king and wicked one can do to a nation. It shows what happens when God heals, miraculously, as He sometimes does. It also shows what happens when a king loses focus and perhaps becomes too sure of his own power and not that given by God. 
 
The events of chapter 32 set in motion what would be the ultimate downfall of Judah at the hands of the Babylonians. However, it was because the kings after Josiah would become as corrupt as Manasseh, and Babylon would simply be the instrument to fulfill the prophetic words of Isaiah. The nation of Israel and Judah could have existed, indefinitely, had they kept their focus on their God who protected them. They instead chose a direction of rebellion, failure and misery, though they knew better.

In this difficult world, your faith will be tested, and at times, severely. Faith that cannot be tested is faith that cannot be trusted. If you did a study through the scriptures, you would find that those whom God used the most were those who went through the greatest trials. There are many examples, Joseph, Moses, Elijah, David, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and many more. 
 
 But God gives principles in His word to strengthen faith in those difficult trials. He also builds a foundation of faith in your life so that when those troubles come, your faith will have been strengthened in advance. 
 
 Even now, God is strengthening your faith through His word and through the current struggles and trials you have endured. God is strengthening you in advance. 
 
Our story unfolds in the southern kingdom of Judah. The back story was that Assyria had become a world dominating power. With absolute cruelty and coldness of heart, they were destroying nation after nation, city after city. 
 
The northern kingdom of Israel had already been destroyed by Assyria at this point. They had done to Israel what they had also done to many other nations, they carried them away to a distant place, caused them to lose their national identity, to simply disappear into the populations of the world. 
After Assyria destroyed and took captive the northern kingdom of Israel, they turned toward Judah where Hezekiah was King, intending to destroy and consume Judah as well. 
 
To strike fear in the hearts of those in Judah, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent officers to Jerusalem to weaken and intimidate them in a war of words. 
 
This encounter between Hezekiah and Sennacherib, king of Assyria, became a monumental turning point in the history of the nation. If they had been taken away to another place and a foreign people had been given this land in their place, then all of God's promises would have come to nothing. 
 
A great spiritual battle was unfolding in this story and there are many spiritual applications and life lessons that we should apply in how we respond when troubles come. 
 
I. In a War of Words – Abide in the Truth 
 
 The king of Assyria sent officials to Hezekiah to weaken and intimidate them in a war of words. 
 
 His opening strategy was straightforward; cause their faith in God to be shaken so fear would overtake them, and they would surrender without a fight. 
 
 Sennacherib’s challenge to their faith was in verse 11, “Is not Hezekiah misleading you, saying, “The Lord our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria?” 
 
 Verse 15, “Do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you like this, do not believe him, do not let him make you trust in the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord will surely deliver us, and the city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’” 
 
 This is the same strategy the enemy of your soul uses today. If he can shake your faith, if he can cause you to lose confidence in who God is in your life, then your own fear will defeat you. You’ll give up without a fight. 
 
 But take note of this… 
 
A. The promises of the enemy are empty 
 Notice the strategy, Sennacherib tried to shake their confidence and faith in the Lord, he tried to strike fear in their hearts, and then tried to soothe those fears with promises of his own. But his promises were empty. 
 From 2 Kings we know that he promised that he would move them to a place where they could feel at home, where there would be an abundance of good things. 
 This is a strategy of the enemy today. He tries to convince people about how good life would be if they just surrendered to his plan for their lives. 
Illus – “Life will be so much more exciting over here in the world. You’re missing out on all the fun, man! The world is where you can live it up, don’t worry, there’s no death here!”

Sennacherib's Defeat and Death 
 
Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed because of this and cried to heaven. And the Lord sent an angel who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned in disgrace to his own land. When he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword. So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of King Sennacherib of Assyria and from the hand of all his enemies; he gave them rest on every side. Many brought gifts to the Lord in Jerusalem and precious things to King Hezekiah of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from that time onward.

It’s a new year and that time when many make New Year’s resolutions. How many have made at least one New Year’s resolution? How many have already broken your New Year’s resolution? 
 
 The most common New Year’s resolution is to diet or eat healthier. Sure, of course, all those Christmas desserts and cookies only added to the winter coat we already had. It’s time to eat better and make a new you. 
 
 Know what’s even better than being physically healthier? Being spiritually healthier. My prayer is that 2023 will be a year of revival, that we as a church grow deeper in faith and closer to the Lord. I have been so excited to see what God has done in our church in 2022, but God is not finished yet. There is so much more God wants to do in us and through us. 
 
The beginning of a new year is a good time to reassess priorities, especially spiritual priorities. As you get another year older, you come to realize the value of the days we have been given. 
 
Psalm 90:12, 14, Teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom…O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. 
 
To number our days means to value them, that we may present to God a heart of wisdom. In other words, that our days count for something, let them increase our wisdom because we value and treasure what God is doing in our lives. 
 
That brings us to 2 Chronicles 32. Hezekiah was reigning as king in Judah in those days. He was a good king. He was the greatest king since David. He trusted in the Lord and brought about a great revival in Israel. He brought reforms that even Solomon had not done. He used the days God had given him well. His life mattered. He made a difference. 
 
Because of Hezekiah’s faithfulness and the revival he brought to Israel, God saved them. Assyria had almost destroyed Judah. Hezekiah prepared Israel for a siege. He engineered a tunnel to divert the Gihon Springs to the Pool of Siloam inside Jerusalem. It was 1,777 feet long and 30 feet underground through solid bedrock. Hezekiah’s tunnel is still active today, though so many walk through it that the water is not used for drinking. 
 
Assyria laid siege to Jerusalem. Hezekiah then received a letter from the king of Assyria warning him not to trust in the God of Israel. But Hezekiah brought that letter to the house of the Lord and laid it out before God and prayed that God would save them. 
 
God responded by saying, “Because you have prayed to Me about the king of Assyria, I have heard you. I will put a hook in his nose and bring him back to the land from which he came.” That night an angel of the Lord came through the camp of Assyria and 185,000 soldiers of Assyria mysteriously died. 
 
Sometime shortly afterward, Hezekiah became mortally ill. That’s where we pick up our story. We don't know the exact nature of his illness, but we do know there was a boil of some type associated with it. Perhaps it was a form of cancer, we don't know for certain. 
 
The prophet Isaiah came to Hezekiah with a message from the Lord, “Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.” There are life lessons and spiritual applications for us in this story. Teach us to number our days, O Lord, that we have a heart of wisdom. 
 
I. Set Your House in Order 
 
 Isaiah brought a message to King Hezekiah that he would die and not live and therefore should set his house in order. 
 
 We use the same phrase today. When someone is facing a terminal illness, sometimes a doctor will say to the patient, “There’s nothing more we can do, you should get your affairs in order.” 
 
 For many people, that means putting together a last will and testament so their family doesn't have to argue about things after they’re gone. 
 
 But is that all there is? If all we leave is something that must be sorted out by a lawyer, I submit that we haven't left enough. 
 
 In other words, wouldn’t you want to leave more than money and things? Wouldn’t you want to leave a legacy? A legacy that meant your life meant something; that you made a difference with your life.
